FutureA
The Browns drew a line under the quarterback search with Ward: C. Some picks age like wine; Tommy Mellott at pick No. 215 will need to, sitting 124 spots clear of his grade.
That Singleton pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Cam Ward gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
So much rides on Cam Ward that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In pick 4 they get their quarterback of the future. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
They let Jalon Walker come to them and pounced at Round 2, Pick 1. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick38
Rnd2
Emeka Egbuka
A tidy bit of business in the 38th overall pick, where Emeka Egbuka graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick67
Rnd3
Kaleb Johnson
They barely believed it either: Kaleb Johnson still on the board at the 67th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick97
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
A safety of that caliber at slot 97 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick103
Rnd4
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick105
Rnd4
Azareye'h Thomas
Nothing to complain about; Azareye'h Thomas went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick107
Rnd4
Colston Loveland
Taking Colston Loveland in the 107th pick is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick122
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Circle this one: Jake Majors at No. 122 is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick138
Rnd5
Rylie Mills
A reasonable price with a little left over, Rylie Mills in Round 5, Pick 1. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick142
Rnd5
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman in slot 142 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick167
Rnd5
Nicholas Singleton
The board fumbled Nicholas Singleton all the way to pick 167, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
Pick178
Rnd6
Connor Colby
Connor Colby in pick No. 178 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
Pick191
Rnd6
Sonny Styles
They robbed the room for Sonny Styles here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick203
Rnd6
Jalen Travis
They reached into another round for Jalen Travis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick214
Rnd6
Clay Webb
They paid sticker price for Clay Webb in pick 214, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick215
Rnd6
Tommy Mellott
Tommy Mellott at the Round 6 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
