Draft Grade — Seahawks

FutureD
A passer of the future in Maye, and a F, for the Seahawks. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Seahawks took McKade Mettauer at the Round 7 slot, roughly 47 spots before his name belonged.
So much rides on Drake Maye that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Seahawks indulged a want in Smith while a need in wide receiver, linebacker and other spots stayed open.
That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring. Braswell at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left wide receiver open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In the 6th pick they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick16
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick39
Rnd2
Quinyon Mitchell
A quiet steal in pick No. 39: Quinyon Mitchell for less than the market said. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick49
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
They paid a round early for Zach Frazier in slot 49, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick70
Rnd3
Chris Braswell
Chris Braswell at the 70th overall pick is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick78
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cooper Beebe. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick80
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A curious use of slot 80. Wide receiver, linebacker and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Pick81
Rnd3
Cade Stover
Of all the spots to shop, they chose TE-EDGE. Cade Stover in the 81st overall pick leaves wide receiver, linebacker and other spots for later.
Pick108
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson at the Round 4 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick116
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams at No. 116 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick119
Rnd4
Jalyx Hunt
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 119 on Jalyx Hunt with wide receiver, linebacker and other spots unsolved.
Pick148
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott in the 148th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick151
Rnd5
Jaylen Wright
Jaylen Wright in pick No. 151 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick175
Rnd5
Jaylen Harrell
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaylen Harrell in Round 5, Pick 39, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick194
Rnd6
Christian Jones
They took Christian Jones at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick233
Rnd7
McKade Mettauer
A big swing on McKade Mettauer at pick No. 233, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
