FutureA+
Grand theft in pick No. 139: the Bears steal Abrams-Draine and grade out a C. The phones were a trap the Bears kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. For now it grades a C, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
They banked enough surplus on Abrams-Draine to cover a lot of smaller sins. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick Analysis
Pick19
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
In No. 19 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu at slot 38 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
Pick51
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
Nice patience on Chop Robinson, who had no business lasting to pick 51. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick75
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Good price on Brenden Rice in Round 3, Pick 11, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick81
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
They did well to land Cooper Beebe in the Round 3 slot, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick83
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
No drama and no debate, Gabriel Murphy went about where he belonged in the 83rd overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick85
Rnd3
Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley in No. 85 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick122
Rnd4
Beau Brade
Value with a capital V on Beau Brade in the 122nd overall pick, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick139
Rnd5
Kris Abrams-Draine
You do not let a cornerback like Kris Abrams-Draine reach the 139th pick and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick146
Rnd5
Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell slid further than he should have, and slot 146 is lovely value for the tight end. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick224
Rnd7
Kedon Slovis
They paid a round early for Kedon Slovis in pick No. 224, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick232
Rnd7
Blake Watson
They read the board right and Blake Watson was the payoff at Round 7, Pick 12. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
