FutureA+
The Bears drew a line under the quarterback search with Maye: D. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Bears shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. That linebacker hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They banked enough surplus on Walker to cover a lot of smaller sins. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and linebacker is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick4
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In No. 4 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
Troy Franklin in pick 35 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick55
Rnd2
Byron Murphy II
Byron Murphy II at slot 55 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick68
Rnd3
Cooper DeJean
Nice patience on Cooper DeJean, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 4. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick90
Rnd3
Mohamed Kamara
They took Mohamed Kamara at par in pick No. 90, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick103
Rnd4
Tyler Davis
Tyler Davis at the 103rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick105
Rnd4
Tory Horton
Value with a capital V on Tory Horton in the 105th pick, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick115
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams in the 115th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick132
Rnd4
Cade Stover
No edge and no loss on Cade Stover in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick141
Rnd5
Tahj Brooks
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tahj Brooks in slot 141. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick182
Rnd6
Devontez Walker
You do not let a wide receiver like Devontez Walker reach No. 182 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick193
Rnd6
Brennan Armstrong
They let Brennan Armstrong come to them and pounced at Round 6, Pick 18. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick225
Rnd7
Tyler Batty
They did well to land Tyler Batty in pick 225, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
