The board owed the Bears one, and it paid up: Max Melton, the No. 112 name on the board, sitting there at No. 181 like a gift left on the doorstep. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C in the wash.

Caleb Williams is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped linebacker, which is a strange place to end up. The Solomon pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at linebacker.

It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
