The Steelers turned the phones into found money: B. The Steelers ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
If Smith pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
The Frazier pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher still on the board. Getting Mims where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value.
Pick40
Rnd2
Amarius Mims
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Amarius Mims at slot 40 is the proof. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick51
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
A want over a need in Round 2, Pick 19: Zach Frazier adds an offensive lineman while edge rusher keeps waiting.
Pick91
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson in the 91st overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick98
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
A conviction pick on Mekhi Wingo at No. 98 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick104
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Isaac Guerendo. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick119
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at pick 119 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick125
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Johnny Wilson. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick126
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
They did well to land Theo Johnson in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick127
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
Jarrian Jones at slot 127 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick130
Rnd4
Tykee Smith
They reached into another round for Tykee Smith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick178
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
A big swing on Joe Milton III at the 178th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick202
Rnd6
M.J. Devonshire
The board had M.J. Devonshire higher than pick 202, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
