Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
D-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesF
FutureC
The Texans cashed the board's mistake on McKinstry: D-. Somebody took the Texans to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. On value alone, McKinstry makes the weekend a net positive.
The Beebe reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Laiatu Latu
In No. 24 they get a problem off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick41
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper in slot 41 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick59
Rnd2
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Kool-Aid McKinstry in pick No. 59 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick63
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy in pick 63 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick64
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at Round 2, Pick 32 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick86
Rnd3
Trey Benson
They paid up for Trey Benson at the 86th pick when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick87
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Taking Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
Pick94
Rnd3
Cade Stover
Nice patience on Cade Stover, who had no business lasting to slot 94. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick98
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
No drama and no debate, Leonard Taylor III went about where he belonged in pick 98. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick124
Rnd4
James Williams
A reasonable price with a little left over, James Williams in Round 4, Pick 24. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick127
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
They paid sticker price for Johnny Wilson in the 127th pick, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick128
Rnd4
Christian Jones
They paid a round early for Christian Jones in the 128th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick236
Rnd7
Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor at No. 236 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick245
Rnd7
Sheridan Jones
They let Sheridan Jones come to them and pounced at pick No. 245. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick250
Rnd7
Daijahn Anthony
A clean, defensible pick in Round 7, Pick 30 with a little surplus value in Daijahn Anthony. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
