Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB- TradesA FutureC
Hunt should have been long gone. The 49ers pounced, and earned a B.

You could see the war room lean forward. Jalyx Hunt at Round 6, Pick 34 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.

Spending an early pick on cornerback with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Every board in the league had Gore Jr. lower, and that gap is the story.

They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Nate Wiggins
In pick No. 31 they get a ballhawk on the outside, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
Pick43 Rnd2 Kamari Lassiter
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent pick 43 on Kamari Lassiter, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick63 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at No. 63 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick94 Rnd3 Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany at slot 94 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick125 Rnd4 Mekhi Wingo
A slide stopped in the 125th overall pick, with Mekhi Wingo worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick132 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cedric Gray at the 132nd pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick176 Rnd6 Luke McCaffrey
The board had Luke McCaffrey higher than the Round 6 slot, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick209 Rnd6 Jalyx Hunt
Steal is underselling it; Jalyx Hunt at Round 6, Pick 34 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick214 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. in the 214th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick215 Rnd6 Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan at pick 215 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick221 Rnd7 Tyrice Knight
Tyrice Knight at slot 221 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick225 Rnd7 Tanor Bortolini
Value with a capital V on Tanor Bortolini in Round 7, Pick 5, a genuine coup. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick249 Rnd7 Javontae Jean-Baptiste
The board fumbled Javontae Jean-Baptiste all the way to the 249th pick, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
