Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the 49ers a B. The 49ers did not so much draft Tyreak Sapp as overpay for him, 137 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
Knight Jr. falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Mason Graham
Mason Graham at pick 11 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick63
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at the 63rd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75
Rnd3
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren in slot 75 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick89
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Andrew Mukuba in the 89th pick, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jake Majors
Jake Majors in No. 99 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick111
Rnd4
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Demetrius Knight Jr. in Round 4, Pick 10 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick126
Rnd4
Cobee Bryant
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cobee Bryant in No. 126, miles early. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick128
Rnd4
Tyreak Sapp
They reached into another round for Tyreak Sapp, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick137
Rnd4
Brashard Smith
Brashard Smith at the 137th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick160
Rnd5
Nazir Stackhouse
Value said wait; Nazir Stackhouse in pick 160 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick164
Rnd5
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa at Round 5, Pick 27 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick165
Rnd5
Ricky White III
Ricky White III at pick No. 165 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick185
Rnd6
Miles Frazier
A reach on Miles Frazier in the 185th pick; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick208
Rnd6
Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith in the Round 6 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick226
Rnd7
Bru McCoy
Bru McCoy at pick 226 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
