The Patriots did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent the 238th overall pick on Gino Garcia, a name the board had a full 60 spots lower.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. However the rest shakes out, Loveland at that price is a win they earned.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In No. 14 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
The board had Colston Loveland higher than the 38th pick, and the tight end fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Pick45
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Omarion Hampton at pick 45 is the proof. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick69
Rnd3
Darien Porter
They took Darien Porter at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick77
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo at slot 77 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick106
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton at pick No. 106 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick144
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore at Round 5, Pick 6 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick217
Rnd7
Cam Jackson
A reach on Cam Jackson in No. 217; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick220
Rnd7
Cam Horsley
Cam Horsley at pick No. 220 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick238
Rnd7
Gino Garcia
They reached a country mile for Gino Garcia at pick 238, and the board is aghast. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
