Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall D
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureB-
The phones sank the Bengals this weekend: D.

The Bengals spent real capital to be 59 picks early on Xavier Thomas, and the board is going to hold them to it. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, linebacker went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The Burton pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, linebacker very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In pick No. 18 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick23 Rnd1 JC Latham
In No. 23 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
Pick49 Rnd2 Kalen King
Kalen King is a better player than the 49th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick80 Rnd3 Jermaine Burton
The board fumbled Jermaine Burton all the way to pick 80, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick115 Rnd4 Bucky Irving
Bucky Irving in the 115th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick151 Rnd5 Cole Bishop
Somehow Cole Bishop was still sitting there in slot 151, and they pounced on premier safety value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick173 Rnd5 AJ Barner
They reached into another round for AJ Barner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick196 Rnd6 Xavier Thomas
Value said wait; Xavier Thomas in Round 6, Pick 21 says they were not listening. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick238 Rnd7 Daequan Hardy
The board had Daequan Hardy higher than the Round 7 slot, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick254 Rnd7 Jayson Jones
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jayson Jones this early at the 254th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
