Draft Grade — Bills

FutureD
The Bills drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: F. The Christian Jones selection is the head-turner. The Bills reached 33 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
They will regret leaving linebacker for another day if the season turns on it. The Sainristil pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with linebacker, safety and other spots still on the board.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left linebacker open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In the 7th pick they get a franchise quarterback, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
Pick23
Rnd1
Terrion Arnold
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a sticky cover corner. Need was not the driver here.
Pick28
Rnd1
Adonai Mitchell
In No. 28 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick50
Rnd2
Mike Sainristil
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Mike Sainristil adds a cornerback and leaves linebacker, safety and other spots untouched.
Pick60
Rnd2
Ricky Pearsall
By-the-book stuff, Ricky Pearsall at pick No. 60 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick78
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in the Round 3 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick100
Rnd3
Christian Jones
They reached into another round for Christian Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick106
Rnd4
Maason Smith
Maason Smith in No. 106 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick108
Rnd4
Will Shipley
They paid sticker price for Will Shipley in the 108th overall pick, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick128
Rnd4
Josh Newton
A curious use of pick No. 128. Linebacker, safety and other spots needed the pick; a cornerback in Josh Newton did not.
Pick134
Rnd4
McKinnley Jackson
A tidy bit of business in slot 134, where McKinnley Jackson graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick160
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
The board had Luke McCaffrey higher than the 160th pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick257
Rnd7
Josh Wallace
A reasonable price with a little left over, Josh Wallace in pick 257. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
