Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Patriots a B+. The trade table was a mismatch, and the Patriots were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Edwards falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
They will need McLaughlin to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The veteran additions, Justin Jefferson chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In the Round 1 slot they get a moveable chess piece at tight end at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick38
Rnd2
Marcus Mbow
They jumped the gun on Marcus Mbow, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick77
Rnd3
Ashton Gillotte
Ashton Gillotte at No. 77 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick106
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
They paid sticker price for Jordan Phillips in Round 4, Pick 4, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick144
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
They reached a country mile for Seth McLaughlin at pick 144, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick217
Rnd7
Ricky White III
Ricky White III at the 217th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick220
Rnd7
Donovan Edwards
They let Donovan Edwards come to them and pounced at slot 220. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
The board had Jermari Harris higher than pick No. 238, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
