Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall
D
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB+
The Bengals let Washington fall and pounced. Final grade: D. Somebody took the Bengals to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On value alone, Washington makes the weekend a net positive.
The Bengals clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
JC Latham
In the 20th overall pick they get a blindside protector at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Troy Franklin. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick48
Rnd2
Kris Abrams-Draine
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 48, where Kris Abrams-Draine graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick84
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
By-the-book stuff, Christian Haynes at the 84th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick104
Rnd4
Payton Wilson
A quiet steal in No. 104: Payton Wilson for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
Pick116
Rnd4
Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards in slot 116 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick120
Rnd4
Howard Cross III
No edge and no loss on Howard Cross III in No. 120; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick153
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
Javion Cohen in Round 5, Pick 17 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick190
Rnd6
Malik Washington
Somehow Malik Washington was still sitting there in slot 190, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick194
Rnd6
Sheridan Jones
They let Sheridan Jones come to them and pounced at pick No. 194. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick237
Rnd7
Marques Cox
Marques Cox is a better player than the Round 7 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick254
Rnd7
Benjamin Yurosek
A straight-up fair deal on Benjamin Yurosek at the 254th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
