Draft Grade — Falcons
Overall
A-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA+
The Falcons turned the phones into found money: A-. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Falcons started one anyway for Xavier Thomas, 89 picks ahead of schedule.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Tracy Jr.. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Cooper DeJean and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
In slot 23 they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick26
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
In pick 26 they get an island corner, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick43
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
A straight-up fair deal on J.J. McCarthy at No. 43, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick59
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
Chris Braswell at Round 2, Pick 27 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick98
Rnd3
Mason McCormick
Mason McCormick at the 98th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick110
Rnd4
Malachi Corley
They robbed the room for Malachi Corley here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick142
Rnd5
Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop slid further than he should have, and the 142nd overall pick is lovely value for the safety. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick170
Rnd5
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick171
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in No. 171 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick189
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xavier Thomas this early at Round 6, Pick 14. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick210
Rnd6
Matthew Jones
They reached a country mile for Matthew Jones at pick 210, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick241
Rnd7
Dylan McMahon
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dylan McMahon well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick249
Rnd7
Tyrone Tracy Jr.
Taking Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the 249th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
