Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a D-.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Peyton Bowen in pick 216. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. Getting Haulcy where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick15 Rnd1 LT Overton
They jumped the gun on LT Overton, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick33 Rnd2 Anthony Hill Jr.
Anthony Hill Jr. in pick No. 33 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick34 Rnd2 Trevor Goosby
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trevor Goosby this early at the Round 2 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick86 Rnd3 A.J. Haulcy
A safety of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 22 is the definition of value, full stop. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick114 Rnd4 Deion Burks
They took Deion Burks at par in No. 114, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick155 Rnd5 Nic Anderson
They did well to land Nic Anderson in the 155th pick, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick178 Rnd5 Gracen Halton
A wild overpay on Gracen Halton in Round 5, Pick 38, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick179 Rnd5 Aamil Wagner
A straight-up fair deal on Aamil Wagner at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick216 Rnd7 Peyton Bowen
Peyton Bowen in pick 216 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick229 Rnd7 Malik Hartford
Malik Hartford in pick No. 229 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
