Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall
B
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Grand theft in pick 163: the Chiefs steal Fautanu and grade out a B. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chiefs were there to profit. Troy Fautanu, the No. 117 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 5, Pick 27.
For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain. They are betting Batty proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
JT Tuimoloau
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
Jordan Morgan at the Round 2 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
Byron Murphy II
The board fumbled Byron Murphy II all the way to pick No. 94, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick131
Rnd4
Antwane Wells Jr.
Antwane Wells Jr. at pick 131 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick163
Rnd5
Troy Fautanu
Taking Troy Fautanu in the 163rd pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick171
Rnd5
J. Michael Sturdivant
A quiet steal in the 171st overall pick: J. Michael Sturdivant for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick175
Rnd5
Kamal Hadden
They took Kamal Hadden at par in slot 175, which is nothing to complain about. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick209
Rnd6
Tyler Batty
They reached into another round for Tyler Batty, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick252
Rnd7
Mario Williams
They barely believed it either: Mario Williams still on the board at the Round 7 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
