Draft Grade — Chargers

FutureF
The Chargers jumped the board for Dobbs and paid for it: F. The Chargers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick No. 256 on Jacob Dobbs a full 151 spots early.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Chargers indulged a want in Smith while a need in quarterback, tight end and other spots stayed open. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left quarterback open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Laiatu Latu
By-the-book stuff, Laiatu Latu at No. 6 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick16
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In pick No. 16 they get a premier pass rusher at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick21
Rnd1
T'Vondre Sweat
They liked T'Vondre Sweat enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 21. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick38
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper at the 38th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick39
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy at Round 2, Pick 7 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick43
Rnd2
Kris Abrams-Draine
Fair-plus on Kris Abrams-Draine, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick48
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
They paid a round early for Jonathon Brooks in pick 48, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick70
Rnd3
Jack Sawyer
Jack Sawyer in pick No. 70 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick85
Rnd3
Maason Smith
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 3, Pick 22 on Maason Smith with quarterback, tight end and other spots unsolved.
Pick106
Rnd4
Howard Cross III
Howard Cross III at slot 106 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick143
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ainias Smith. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick184
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
They paid sticker price for Michael Barrett in the 184th overall pick, and that is fine. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick189
Rnd6
Hayden Hatten
They reached into another round for Hayden Hatten, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick256
Rnd7
Jacob Dobbs
A big swing on Jacob Dobbs at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
