The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the D. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 34 spots for Skyler Gill-Howard, and value like that does not grow back. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, running back very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
In the 18th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter at the Round 2 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick59
Rnd2
Max Klare
No drama and no debate, Max Klare went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 27. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick92
Rnd3
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Taking Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in No. 92 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick99
Rnd3
Skyler Gill-Howard
Skyler Gill-Howard in pick 99 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick133
Rnd4
Albert Regis
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Albert Regis well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick138
Rnd4
Ted Hurst
The board had cheaper options than Ted Hurst at pick 138, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
