The Patriots answered their biggest question with Maye. Grade: B. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
If Whittington pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on TE-EDGE is the choice that costs them.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In the 5th overall pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value.
Pick34
Rnd2
Keon Coleman
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Keon Coleman at the Round 2 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick37
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
Value with a capital V on Troy Fautanu in the 37th pick, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick68
Rnd3
Trey Benson
No drama and no debate, Trey Benson went about where he belonged in slot 68. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick103
Rnd4
Cade Stover
A want over a need in pick No. 103: Cade Stover adds a TE-EDGE while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick139
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
They took Ben Sinnott at par in No. 139, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick182
Rnd6
Isaiah Williams
Isaiah Williams at Round 6, Pick 7 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick224
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
No edge and no loss on Joshua Cephus in pick 224; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick232
Rnd7
Jordan Whittington
They talked themselves into Jordan Whittington at the 232nd pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
