Draft Grade — Bills
Overall
D-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Bills bled value on every deal, hence the D-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Bills took Omar Speights a full 137 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick27
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In pick 27 they get a potential shutdown corner. More want than need.
Pick28
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
They talked themselves into Kingsley Suamataia at pick No. 35, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick71
Rnd3
Calen Bullock
They paid a round early for Calen Bullock in slot 71, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
Pick90
Rnd3
Maason Smith
They left a pile of value on the table to take Maason Smith this early at the 90th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick115
Rnd4
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at the 115th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jordan Jefferson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jordan Jefferson well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jaylan Ford
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylan Ford. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick189
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson at the 189th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick200
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
A big swing on Frank Gore Jr. at slot 200, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick204
Rnd6
Omar Speights
Value said wait; Omar Speights in Round 6, Pick 29 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick248
Rnd7
Charles Turner III
Charles Turner III at No. 248 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
