You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The 49ers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

Whatever Jayden Daniels becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Corum.

They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
