Willyboys DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers let James fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jordan James got past him. The 49ers do not have to explain a thing at the 187th pick.
They are betting Garcia proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Josh Conerly Jr.
In No. 11 they get protection for the quarterback, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
They robbed the room for Colston Loveland here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Denzel Burke
A premium they did not need to pay, Denzel Burke a notch or two before his time. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick100
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Andrew Mukuba at Round 3, Pick 36. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick113
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson in pick 113 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138
Rnd4
Tyler Cooper
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tyler Cooper in the 138th pick, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick147
Rnd5
Darius Alexander
They will replay Darius Alexander at the 147th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick187
Rnd6
Jordan James
Jordan James at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick226
Rnd7
Gino Garcia
Gino Garcia at slot 226 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick230
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan at pick No. 230 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick249
Rnd7
Kevin Jennings
The board had cheaper options than Kevin Jennings at Round 7, Pick 33, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick252
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 252 is the definition of value, full stop. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
