Willyboys DRAFTING FOR THEEagles
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Eagles
Overall
C+
ValueD+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Flashes of a plan, unevenly executed. Eagles: C+. Nobody had Nick Martin this high, and it is not close. The Eagles reached 135 spots to get him at No. 130. The final tally is a middling C+.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Trapilo. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Eagles indulged a want in Martin while a need in cornerback, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open. They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
If Jack Sawyer and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Jack Sawyer
In No. 32 they get juice off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick64
Rnd2
Barrett Carter
A reach for Barrett Carter in Round 2, Pick 32; a little patience would have been rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick96
Rnd3
Ja'Quinden Jackson
They reached a country mile for Ja'Quinden Jackson at the 96th pick, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick130
Rnd4
Nick Martin
A curious use of the Round 4 slot. Cornerback, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Nick Martin did not.
Pick161
Rnd5
Jonas Sanker
Value said wait; Jonas Sanker in slot 161 says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick164
Rnd5
LaJohntay Wester
LaJohntay Wester at the 164th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick165
Rnd5
Ozzy Trapilo
Taking Ozzy Trapilo in pick 165 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick168
Rnd5
Ryan Fitzgerald
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ryan Fitzgerald in the 168th pick. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
