Felton should have been long gone. The 49ers pounced, and earned a B. You build a draft on nights like this. Tai Felton had no business being available in pick No. 138, and the 49ers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Josh Simmons
In the 14th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick75
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston at pick No. 75 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jared Wilson. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Fair-plus on Jordan Phillips, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick138
Rnd4
Tai Felton
They robbed the room for Tai Felton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick147
Rnd5
Luke Kandra
By-the-book stuff, Luke Kandra at No. 147 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick163
Rnd5
DJ Giddens
No edge and no loss on DJ Giddens in pick 163; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick227
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
They paid sticker price for Desmond Watson in No. 227, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick249
Rnd7
Bilhal Kone
They will replay Bilhal Kone at pick 249 for years; that is how good the value is. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick252
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton in Round 7, Pick 36 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
