The Patriots finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a F. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent the 218th pick on Jacob Dobbs, a name most had 188 spots down the list. A F, plain and simple.
So much rides on Michael Penix Jr. that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake. The Pearsall pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Michael Penix Jr.
In slot 8 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Pick11
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In pick No. 11 they get a building block for the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick14
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In the 14th overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick15
Rnd1
JC Latham
In pick 15 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
Good price on T'Vondre Sweat in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick43
Rnd2
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at Round 2, Pick 11 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jackson Powers-Johnson
They paid a round early for Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 67th pick, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick72
Rnd3
Maason Smith
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 72 on Maason Smith with safety and running back unsolved.
Pick103
Rnd4
Roman Wilson
By-the-book stuff, Roman Wilson at slot 103 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick104
Rnd4
Cade Stover
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cade Stover well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick140
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick146
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
They paid up for Ben Sinnott at pick No. 146 when waiting would have done the job. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick181
Rnd6
Hayden Hatten
They reached into another round for Hayden Hatten, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick214
Rnd6
Ricky Pearsall
Ricky Pearsall at pick 214 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick216
Rnd6
Graham Mertz
Graham Mertz in pick 216 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick218
Rnd6
Jacob Dobbs
Jacob Dobbs in Round 6, Pick 43 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick221
Rnd7
Jordan Jefferson
A big swing on Jordan Jefferson at pick No. 221, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick224
Rnd7
Justin Eboigbe
Justin Eboigbe at the 224th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
