Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C+
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureA
The Patriots got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C+.

Somebody took the Patriots to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Rattler value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.

In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.

Pick Analysis
Pick34 Rnd2 Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu at pick No. 34 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick36 Rnd2 Ladd McConkey
A tidy little value on Ladd McConkey in the 36th pick, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick40 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 8 with a little surplus value in Chop Robinson. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick67 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
They took Brenden Rice at par in No. 67, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick68 Rnd3 Caelen Carson
Caelen Carson at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick102 Rnd4 Spencer Rattler
Spencer Rattler in pick 102 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
Pick103 Rnd4 Matt Goncalves
Matt Goncalves at slot 103 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick139 Rnd5 James Williams
James Williams at the 139th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick182 Rnd6 Brennan Jackson
The board had Brennan Jackson higher than the Round 6 slot, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick224 Rnd7 Brevyn Spann-Ford
By-the-book stuff, Brevyn Spann-Ford at the 224th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick232 Rnd7 Blake Watson
Fair-plus on Blake Watson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
