Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureC
The Patriots lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story.

Nobody else had Jacob Dobbs anywhere near the Round 7 slot. The Patriots did, by 150 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Put together, it is a D-.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

They banked enough surplus on Pearsall to cover a lot of smaller sins.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick Analysis
Pick3 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In the 3rd overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick14 Rnd1 Jared Verse
In pick 14 they get a double-digit-sack hope at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick26 Rnd1 T'Vondre Sweat
In pick No. 26 they get a load in the middle. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick34 Rnd2 Quinn Ewers
They took Quinn Ewers at par in the 34th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick35 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders at No. 35 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick39 Rnd2 Amarius Mims
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Amarius Mims at Round 2, Pick 7 is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick42 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
They paid up for Cooper Beebe at the Round 2 slot when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
Pick67 Rnd3 Jackson Powers-Johnson
They paid a round early for Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 67th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick103 Rnd4 Dominick Puni
They read the board right and Dominick Puni was the payoff at pick No. 103. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick104 Rnd4 Cade Stover
Cade Stover at slot 104 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick140 Rnd5 Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott in No. 140 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
Pick145 Rnd5 Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith at Round 5, Pick 9 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick181 Rnd6 Hayden Hatten
A real head-scratcher, Hayden Hatten in the 181st pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick186 Rnd6 Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett in pick 186 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick224 Rnd7 Ricky Pearsall
Ricky Pearsall in the 224th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick256 Rnd7 Jacob Dobbs
Jacob Dobbs at pick No. 256 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
