Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-

A respectable, level-headed haul for the Patriots: B-.

Nobody had Cooper Mays this high, and it is not close. The Patriots reached 85 spots to get him at No. 220.

They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. On value alone, Winston Jr. makes the weekend a net positive.

Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In pick No. 4 they get a lead back with juice. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery at Round 2, Pick 6 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jalen Royals
Jalen Royals in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick77 Rnd3 Jordan Burch
Jordan Burch at the 77th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick106 Rnd4 Kevin Winston Jr.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kevin Winston Jr. in slot 106. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick144 Rnd5 Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore at the 144th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick217 Rnd7 Jabbar Muhammad
A wild overpay on Jabbar Muhammad in the 217th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick220 Rnd7 Cooper Mays
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cooper Mays. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick238 Rnd7 Shemar James
A straight-up fair deal on Shemar James at pick No. 238, value and slot in agreement. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
