Draft Grade — Texans

The Texans kept it disciplined and banked a B-.

When the story of this class is written, it opens with Maason Smith at the 58th pick, a reach of 26 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.

The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In pick 23 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick58 Rnd2 Maason Smith
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in the Round 2 slot leaves interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots for later.
Pick90 Rnd3 Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley at slot 90 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick123 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
A tidy little value on Khyree Jackson in the 123rd overall pick, a step better than break-even. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick126 Rnd4 Shemar Turner
They jumped the gun on Shemar Turner, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick163 Rnd5 Ty'Ron Hopper
They paid up for Ty'Ron Hopper at the 163rd pick when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick239 Rnd7 Carson Steele
Carson Steele in pick No. 239 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247 Rnd7 Ja'Had Carter
A clean, defensible pick in the 247th pick with a little surplus value in Ja'Had Carter. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
