Draft Grade — Browns

The Browns turned the phones into found money: A-.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Browns spent No. 210 on James Smith, a name most had 35 spots down the list.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Reese falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

The Jaylen Waddle pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.

Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Carnell Tate
No edge and no loss on Carnell Tate in the 11th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick27 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In the Round 1 slot they get the heartbeat of the defense, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick38 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter at pick No. 38 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick44 Rnd2 Olaivavega Ioane
A straight-up fair deal on Olaivavega Ioane at No. 44, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick59 Rnd2 Austin Siereveld
Austin Siereveld at Round 2, Pick 27 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick69 Rnd3 LaNorris Sellers
LaNorris Sellers at the 69th pick is money in the bank, a quarterback taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick104 Rnd4 Keon Sabb
Keon Sabb at Round 4, Pick 4 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick141 Rnd5 DJ McKinney
DJ McKinney in the 141st overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick142 Rnd5 Blake Miller
Blake Miller in No. 142 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick148 Rnd5 Jadarian Price
A quiet steal in the Round 5 slot: Jadarian Price for less than the market said. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick210 Rnd6 James Smith
This one needs a full-page explanation: James Smith in the 210th pick, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick248 Rnd7 Brandon Inniss
They went early on Brandon Inniss in pick No. 248, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
