The phones sank the Cowboys this weekend: D. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Mason Fairchild in Round 7, Pick 26.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Jordan Morgan
In pick 22 they get a building block for the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick24
Rnd1
Keon Coleman
In the Round 1 slot they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick56
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat in the 56th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick75
Rnd3
Junior Colson
No drama and no debate, Junior Colson went about where he belonged in No. 75. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick87
Rnd3
Bucky Irving
They paid sticker price for Bucky Irving in pick No. 87, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick88
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
They let Christian Mahogany come to them and pounced at slot 88. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick110
Rnd4
Jordan Travis
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Travis in the 110th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick122
Rnd4
Javon Foster
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Javon Foster. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick174
Rnd5
Josh Proctor
The board had cheaper options than Josh Proctor at the Round 5 slot, and it noticed. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick203
Rnd6
Jase McClellan
A reach on Jase McClellan in slot 203; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick212
Rnd6
Marcus Harris
They left a pile of value on the table to take Marcus Harris this early at pick 212. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick217
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Nathaniel Watson. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick219
Rnd6
Matthew Jones
This one needs a full-page explanation: Matthew Jones in pick No. 219, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick245
Rnd7
Dwight McGlothern
A conviction pick on Dwight McGlothern at Round 7, Pick 25 that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick246
Rnd7
Mason Fairchild
A big swing on Mason Fairchild at No. 246, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
