Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall F
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureD+
The Smith reach set a tone the 49ers could not shake: F.

The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in James Smith, taking him 38 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. It is not that Scott is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first.

The Haulcy pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In pick No. 32 they get a three-down second-level presence, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick38 Rnd2 Kenyon Sadiq
The board had Kenyon Sadiq higher than Round 2, Pick 6, and the tight end fell to them anyway. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick54 Rnd2 Elijah Sarratt
They paid sticker price for Elijah Sarratt in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick57 Rnd2 Olaivavega Ioane
Olaivavega Ioane is a better player than pick 57 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick59 Rnd2 Jonah Coleman
Nice patience on Jonah Coleman, who had no business lasting to slot 59. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick78 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
The board had cheaper options than Malachi Fields at No. 78, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick85 Rnd3 Caleb Tiernan
Caleb Tiernan at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick89 Rnd3 Drew Shelton
Drew Shelton in No. 89 is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick90 Rnd3 Mikail Kamara
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Mikail Kamara. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick91 Rnd3 Deontae Lawson
Taking Deontae Lawson in the 91st pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick94 Rnd3 C.J. Fite
C.J. Fite at pick 94 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick96 Rnd3 Anto Saka
They talked themselves into Anto Saka at the 96th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick98 Rnd3 A.J. Haulcy
They robbed the room for A.J. Haulcy here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick99 Rnd3 Keith Abney II
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Keith Abney II at Round 3, Pick 35. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick123 Rnd4 Parker Brailsford
They jumped the gun on Parker Brailsford, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick125 Rnd4 Zachariah Branch
A tidy little value on Zachariah Branch in the Round 4 slot, a step better than break-even. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick135 Rnd4 Xavier Scott
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Xavier Scott, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick139 Rnd4 Tao Johnson
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Tao Johnson adds a safety and leaves quarterback untouched.
Pick140 Rnd4 Sammy Omosigho
Sammy Omosigho at No. 140 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick205 Rnd6 James Smith
They left a pile of value on the table to take James Smith this early at Round 6, Pick 25. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
