Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureC+
The Bears bled value on every deal, hence the D-.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Bears did exactly that with Max Iheanachor in the Round 4 slot.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Hill Jr. at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick38 Rnd2 Caleb Banks
By-the-book stuff, Caleb Banks at the 38th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick44 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman slipping to the Round 2 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick57 Rnd2 Anthony Hill Jr.
Somehow Anthony Hill Jr. was still sitting there in pick 57, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick59 Rnd2 Keith Abney II
The board had Keith Abney II higher than slot 59, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick69 Rnd3 Max Klare
Max Klare in No. 69 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick94 Rnd3 Jake Golday
A tidy bit of business in the 94th pick, where Jake Golday graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick103 Rnd4 Caden Curry
They paid sticker price for Caden Curry in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick106 Rnd4 Max Iheanachor
Max Iheanachor at Round 4, Pick 6 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick128 Rnd4 Mike Washington Jr.
They took Mike Washington Jr. at par in the 128th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick130 Rnd4 Skyler Gill-Howard
No edge and no loss on Skyler Gill-Howard in slot 130; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick131 Rnd4 DeMonte Capehart
No drama and no debate, DeMonte Capehart went about where he belonged in the 131st pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick163 Rnd5 Aaron Anderson
Aaron Anderson slid further than he should have, and pick No. 163 is lovely value for the wide receiver. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick169 Rnd5 Patrick Payton
A real head-scratcher, Patrick Payton in No. 169 is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick210 Rnd6 Isaac Smith
A premium they did not need to pay, Isaac Smith a notch or two before his time. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick239 Rnd7 Micah Morris
Micah Morris at Round 7, Pick 23 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick241 Rnd7 Kamran James
A wild overpay on Kamran James in pick 241, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick251 Rnd7 Alex Harkey
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Alex Harkey. The roster fit checks out.
