Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall F
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureD
The Brailsford reach set the tone, and the 49ers never recovered: F.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Parker Brailsford at No. 86 is 37 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. There is no dressing it up: a F.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The Ponds pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback. Ponds at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.

Pick Analysis
Pick41 Rnd2 Jonah Coleman
No drama and no debate, Jonah Coleman went about where he belonged in the 41st overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick50 Rnd2 Elijah Sarratt
A reasonable price with a little left over, Elijah Sarratt in Round 2, Pick 18. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick56 Rnd2 Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton at pick No. 56 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick61 Rnd2 Antonio Williams
A premium they did not need to pay, Antonio Williams a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick69 Rnd3 Suntarine Perkins
They left a pile of value on the table to take Suntarine Perkins this early at slot 69. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick76 Rnd3 Anto Saka
A big swing on Anto Saka at the Round 3 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
Pick79 Rnd3 Drew Shelton
No edge and no loss on Drew Shelton in the 79th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick86 Rnd3 Parker Brailsford
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Parker Brailsford well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick88 Rnd3 Blake Miller
A real head-scratcher, Blake Miller in pick 88 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick93 Rnd3 Joe Royer
This one needs a full-page explanation: Joe Royer in the Round 3 slot, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick94 Rnd3 Chase Bisontis
Chase Bisontis at Round 3, Pick 30 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick95 Rnd3 Harold Perkins Jr.
They took Harold Perkins Jr. at par in pick No. 95, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick96 Rnd3 Jaishawn Barham
They went early on Jaishawn Barham in No. 96, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick111 Rnd4 Xavier Scott
Xavier Scott at slot 111 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick113 Rnd4 Jalon Kilgore
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 113 with a little surplus value in Jalon Kilgore. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick123 Rnd4 D'Angelo Ponds
A want over a need in slot 123: D'Angelo Ponds adds a cornerback while quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick124 Rnd4 Kenyatta Jackson Jr.
They read the board right and Kenyatta Jackson Jr. was the payoff at the 124th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick129 Rnd4 Aaron Graves
Value said wait; Aaron Graves in No. 129 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick137 Rnd4 Chase Roberts
By-the-book stuff, Chase Roberts at the 137th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick138 Rnd4 CJ Baxter
A tidy little value on CJ Baxter in Round 4, Pick 38, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick149 Rnd5 Isaac Smith
They paid sticker price for Isaac Smith in pick 149, and that is fine. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick173 Rnd5 Earnest Greene III
Earnest Greene III at the Round 5 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick179 Rnd5 Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp in Round 5, Pick 40 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Pick205 Rnd6 Tristan Leigh
Tristan Leigh in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
