The rest of the league had time to spare on Jacob Dobbs; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 150 spots ahead at No. 256.

So much rides on Michael Penix Jr. that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.

The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first.

They banked enough surplus on Smith to cover a lot of smaller sins. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left safety open, and the grade is the bill.
