The Bears lost the trade table, and the D tells the story. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Bears reached some 36 spots for Patrick Payton, and value like that does not grow back. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. That Trotter pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Jeffery Simmons gives the group a proven body among the projects.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick57
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
A slide stopped in pick No. 57, with Dillon Thieneman worth more than the price. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick89
Rnd3
Josiah Trotter
A linebacker of that caliber at the 89th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick155
Rnd5
Jalen Stroman
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Jalen Stroman graded well above the range. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick163
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at slot 163 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick170
Rnd5
Rayshaun Benny
Rayshaun Benny at pick 170 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick216
Rnd6
Fernando Carmona
They paid sticker price for Fernando Carmona in the 216th pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick239
Rnd7
Kamran James
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kamran James well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick241
Rnd7
Ricardo Hallman
Nothing to complain about; Ricardo Hallman went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick253
Rnd7
Jalil Farooq
They read the board right and Jalil Farooq was the payoff at slot 253. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
