The Steelers did enough to get by: C+. The Steelers torched the value chart for Jordan Whittington, taking him 53 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
The McCormick pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback, safety and other spots. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Melton falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Interior defensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Graham Barton
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick51
Rnd2
Malachi Corley
They paid a round early for Malachi Corley in No. 51, more than the board wanted. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick84
Rnd3
Max Melton
Max Melton slipping to Round 3, Pick 20 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick98
Rnd3
Maason Smith
They went early on Maason Smith in the 98th overall pick, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick126
Rnd4
Mason McCormick
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Mason McCormick adds an offensive lineman and leaves quarterback, safety and other spots untouched.
Pick178
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
They talked themselves into Jaylan Ford at pick No. 178, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick195
Rnd6
Jordan Whittington
A big swing on Jordan Whittington at Round 6, Pick 20, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
