FutureA
Grand theft in slot 34: the Cowboys steal Golden and grade out a B. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Matthew Golden, the No. 14 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 34th overall pick. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick34
Rnd2
Matthew Golden
Somehow Matthew Golden was still sitting there in No. 34, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick36
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton at slot 36 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It fills a real need, too.
Pick65
Rnd3
Azareye'h Thomas
Value with a capital V on Azareye'h Thomas in the 65th pick, a genuine coup. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick76
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins at the 76th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick149
Rnd5
Logan Brown
Logan Brown in pick No. 149 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jake Briningstool
Jake Briningstool in Round 5, Pick 36 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick204
Rnd6
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
A clean, defensible pick in pick 204 with a little surplus value in KeAndre Lambert-Smith. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jason Marshall Jr.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jason Marshall Jr. in the Round 6 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
They paid sticker price for Jamon Dumas-Johnson in Round 7, Pick 23, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick247
Rnd7
Kitan Crawford
No edge and no loss on Kitan Crawford in the 247th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
