Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureC+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Panthers to a D-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Panthers did exactly that with Jake Majors in the 191st pick. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Simmons value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Luther Burden III
In No. 1 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick25
Rnd1
JT Tuimoloau
In the 25th pick they get juice off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick50
Rnd2
Kaimon Rucker
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kaimon Rucker well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick57
Rnd2
Mitchell Evans
The board had Mitchell Evans higher than the Round 2 slot, and the tight end fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Pick65
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson in pick 65 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick86
Rnd3
Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander at the 86th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick89
Rnd3
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in slot 89 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick97
Rnd4
Josh Simmons
They will replay Josh Simmons at pick No. 97 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick121
Rnd4
Derrick Moore
A slide stopped in the 121st pick, with Derrick Moore worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick159
Rnd5
Aeneas Peebles
Aeneas Peebles at the Round 5 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick191
Rnd6
Jake Majors
They reached into another round for Jake Majors, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick223
Rnd7
DeMonte Capehart
They talked themselves into DeMonte Capehart at Round 7, Pick 31, and the board did not agree. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
