Best value of the weekend goes to the Panthers for Johnson: B+. When a board-topper like Kaleb Johnson slides to Round 5, Pick 24, you do not overthink it, and the Panthers did not. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
Strong has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the Round 1 slot they get a double-digit-sack hope. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick47
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kenneth Grant in pick No. 47, miles early. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick71
Rnd3
Malachi Moore
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malachi Moore in the 71st pick, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick107
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
You do not let a linebacker like Smael Mondon Jr. reach No. 107 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jake Majors
They robbed the room for Jake Majors here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick140
Rnd5
Deontae Lawson
Deontae Lawson in pick 140 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick147
Rnd5
Omarr Norman-Lott
A reach for Omarr Norman-Lott in Round 5, Pick 9; a little patience would have been rewarded. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick150
Rnd5
Keon Sabb
The board fumbled Keon Sabb all the way to the 150th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick162
Rnd5
Kaleb Johnson
Circle this one: Kaleb Johnson at the 162nd pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick189
Rnd6
Conner Weigman
Conner Weigman in slot 189 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick222
Rnd7
Garrett Dellinger
They paid up for Garrett Dellinger at pick No. 222 when waiting would have done the job. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick233
Rnd7
Dorian Strong
They reached into another round for Dorian Strong, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick256
Rnd7
Ben Yurosek
Ben Yurosek at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
