Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureA
The Patriots answered their biggest question with McCarthy. Grade: B+.

The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.

Lovett has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. On value alone, Wallace makes the weekend a net positive.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In the 13th overall pick they get their quarterback of the future, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
Fair-plus on Brian Thomas Jr., a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick68 Rnd3 Junior Colson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Junior Colson at Round 3, Pick 4. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick103 Rnd4 Trey Benson
A quiet steal in pick 103: Trey Benson for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
Pick137 Rnd5 Fabien Lovett
Fabien Lovett in slot 137 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick180 Rnd6 Delmar Glaze
They went early on Delmar Glaze in No. 180, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick193 Rnd6 Ro Torrence
Ro Torrence at pick No. 193 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick231 Rnd7 Caedan Wallace
Somehow Caedan Wallace was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
