Draft Grade — Patriots

The Patriots let Nwankpa fall and pounced. Final grade: B.

The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Xavier Nwankpa, the No. 39 name on the board, in the 66th overall pick. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick7 Rnd1 Kelvin Banks Jr.
In pick No. 7 they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
Pick34 Rnd2 Emery Jones Jr.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Emery Jones Jr.. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick39 Rnd2 Omarion Hampton
Fair-plus on Omarion Hampton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick66 Rnd3 Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa at the Round 3 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick71 Rnd3 Quincy Riley
Quincy Riley in No. 71 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick98 Rnd4 Dillon Gabriel
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Dillon Gabriel in slot 98. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick130 Rnd5 Wyatt Milum
The board fumbled Wyatt Milum all the way to the 130th pick, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
Pick194 Rnd7 Moose Muhammad III
Moose Muhammad III in the 194th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
