Draft Grade — Patriots

The Patriots robbed the room for Trotter Jr.. Final grade: A-. If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Patriots, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They will answer for taking linebacker early while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging.
They banked enough surplus on Trotter Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins. The Chris Godwin deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Bottom line, with Kool-Aid McKinstry leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick19
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Fair-plus on Kool-Aid McKinstry, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick34
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
By-the-book stuff, Troy Fautanu at pick No. 34 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick51
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick68
Rnd3
Edgerrin Cooper
A clean, defensible pick in the 68th pick with a little surplus value in Edgerrin Cooper. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick83
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
A curious use of pick 83. Edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Jeremiah Trotter Jr. did not.
Pick103
Rnd4
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson at slot 103 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick139
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Javion Cohen. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick182
Rnd6
Theo Wease Jr.
A quiet steal in pick No. 182: Theo Wease Jr. for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick224
Rnd7
Steele Chambers
A tidy little value on Steele Chambers in Round 7, Pick 4, a step better than break-even. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
