You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Patriots did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C.

The cost of the Powell-Ryland reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
