Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent pick No. 144 on Vernon Broughton, a name most had 42 spots down the list.

Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.

Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
