A mixed bag for the Patriots, and a C+ to match. The Phillip Webb selection is the head-turner. The Patriots reached 146 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Landing Higgins that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
Hit on Travis Hunter and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Travis Hunter
In the 4th pick they get an island corner at fair value. More want than need.
Pick38
Rnd2
Charles Grant
A real head-scratcher, Charles Grant in pick 38 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at slot 69 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick86
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at pick No. 86 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
Pick106
Rnd4
Hollin Pierce
Hollin Pierce at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick144
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
Andres Borregales at Round 5, Pick 6 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick158
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A big swing on Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick 158, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick199
Rnd6
Phillip Webb
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Phillip Webb well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick217
Rnd7
Thomas Fidone II
Thomas Fidone II in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick220
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
They left a pile of value on the table to take Teddye Buchanan this early at No. 220. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick238
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
They did well to land Isaac TeSlaa in the 238th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
