Kiser should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a B. The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Jack Kiser, the No. 184 name on the board, sitting there at Round 7, Pick 22 like a gift left on the doorstep.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Robinson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
In pick No. 24 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Will Johnson
Somehow Will Johnson was still sitting there in Round 2, Pick 6, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick45
Rnd2
Nic Scourton
Nic Scourton in pick 45 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick69
Rnd3
Tre Harris
Nice patience on Tre Harris, who had no business lasting to slot 69. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick77
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
They barely believed it either: TreVeyon Henderson still on the board at the 77th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick106
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton at the 106th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick144
Rnd5
Denzel Burke
The board fumbled Denzel Burke all the way to No. 144, and they scooped it up. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick171
Rnd5
Que Robinson
They talked themselves into Que Robinson at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick220
Rnd7
Willie Lampkin
Willie Lampkin at pick No. 220 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jack Kiser
Jack Kiser at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
