The Patriots let Smith-Wade fall into their laps, and walked away with a B+. If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Patriots, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.
However the rest shakes out, Smith-Wade at that price is a win they earned. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The veteran additions, Derek Carr chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Jer'Zhan Newton
In the 14th overall pick they get a load in the middle. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
They paid sticker price for Chris Braswell in pick No. 34, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick43
Rnd2
Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick68
Rnd3
T'Vondre Sweat
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 4, with T'Vondre Sweat worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick82
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Fair-plus on Cooper Beebe, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick103
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
A clean, defensible pick in pick 103 with a little surplus value in Blake Fisher. The roster fit checks out.
Pick139
Rnd5
Kamal Hadden
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kamal Hadden in Round 5, Pick 3. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick170
Rnd5
Frank Gore Jr.
Good price on Frank Gore Jr. in pick No. 170, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick182
Rnd6
Chau Smith-Wade
You do not let a cornerback like Chau Smith-Wade reach the Round 6 slot and blink. They did not. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick224
Rnd7
Zakhari Franklin
A straight-up fair deal on Zakhari Franklin at slot 224, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
