Draft Grade — Chargers

FutureF
The Chargers finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a F. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Chargers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
Caleb Williams gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. If Rogers pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with tight end still staring back at them.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In Round 1, Pick 1 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick5
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In pick 5 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick8
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In the Round 1 slot they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick21
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson at the 21st overall pick is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick53
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and T.J. Tampa at the 53rd pick is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick54
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
Fair-plus on Chris Braswell, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick72
Rnd3
Blake Corum
They took Blake Corum at par in No. 72, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick108
Rnd4
Justin Rogers
Justin Rogers in slot 108 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick145
Rnd5
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at pick 145 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick158
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
No edge and no loss on Ainias Smith in the 158th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick229
Rnd7
Jordan Jefferson
Jordan Jefferson in the 229th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
